How walk-in lab testing works: order, blood draw, results
A walk-in lab test is a blood test you order online and have drawn at a lab site. This page walks through each step so you know what to expect.

The steps
- Choose the test. Pick the smallest test that answers your question. The test finder and the testosterone test guide can help.
- Order and pay online. You complete the order yourself. If you plan to use an HSA or FSA, read how HSA and FSA payment works first.
- Read the lab order. It tells you where and how to have the blood drawn and what to do beforehand. Check it for fasting, timing and any medicine or supplement instructions. Fasting and time of day matter most for testosterone.
- Go to a draw site. Check the site’s hours and whether you need an appointment before you go. This guide does not list sites. Your order shows the options.
- Have the blood drawn. MedlinePlus says a lab professional called a phlebotomist takes a blood sample from a vein in your arm with a small needle, and that it usually takes less than five minutes (MedlinePlus).
- Read your results. For many tests the seller’s pages say results arrive in an online account. See results timing for what they state.
Before you go
- MedlinePlus says many lab tests need no special preparation, but for some you fast, for up to several hours or overnight. Ask if you are unsure (MedlinePlus).
- Tell your clinician about every medicine and supplement you take. Do not stop any medicine unless your clinician tells you to.
- If you did not follow the instructions exactly, tell the lab.
What a walk-in test is not
It is not a diagnosis. MedlinePlus says a testosterone level test alone can’t diagnose any health condition, and that results can mean different things depending on the test, your age and your symptoms (MedlinePlus). Treat the result as information to bring to a clinician, especially if you have symptoms.
When to see a clinician instead
- You have symptoms that worry you or that are getting worse.
- You take testosterone therapy or other medicines that may affect hormones. Your prescriber decides which tests you need.
- A result is outside the range printed on your report, or you have questions about it.
The seller this guide links to does not offer tests in every state. See where testing is unavailable.
